Horse-fly
A plague of these on my local NNR peat moss. I think it is Chrysops relictus & as it's a female I'm keeping my distance

What a beauty. Fantastic eyes. Wouldn't recommend the bite though!

That's the only thing about these creatures that I find fascinating - their eyes, hate the mouth part though We are just starting to get them up here, and as I live next to a river will no doubt get bitten, again and again
