| | | Fly ID Please I am trying to record as much of the wildlife at home as I can but although finding them fascinating I am really struggling with the insects so I would be grateful for any suggestions of a good book for beginners.
In the meantime I am stuck with the flies below, could one be a hoverfly and one a dung fly? I haven't a clue what the third thing is. Could anyone help me out please? |

| | | Re: Fly ID Please Top photo shows a sawfly, a Tenthredo species of the arcuata complex.
Middle photo a rhagionid fly, Rhagio tringarius as far as I can tell.
Bottom shot is of a true bug or heteroptera. Would take me too long to work it out but someone will come along.
There are a number of photographic guides to British insects which are useful enough for beginners, but to get into entomology properly is another ballgame, requiring a lot of interest and commitment. |

| | | Re: Fly ID Please Thank you very much lync, it seems a better ID book is definately in order as I was wrong on all counts. I certainly see what you mean, I just googled heteroptera and saw it is a group of about 40,000 species, sadly although definately curious, I don't think I have quite THAT much commitment to learning about insects! |

| | | Re: Fly ID Please I would point you to a site devoted to British Bugs but I can't for "political" reasons. Instead, search google for "british bugs". That should get you there.
(And there are only ~600 species in Britain ) |
