Insect identification - yellow/black striped

Hi

I'm new here, but thought I'd see if there was anyone who may be able to help? Last Sunday morning I was opening the curtain and there, flitting on the outside of the window was a fairly large insect. Body size was about 4cm. It's body was yellow and black striped (pale yellow, the colour of post-it notes), and had wings. What I also noticed was that its legs were also black and yellow striped. I have been searching on the web and books, and can find similar looking insects (horntail or hornet), but they don't appear to be as pale, or indeed have striped legs. Its behaviour in flight was very much like that of crane-flies, very flitty! If anyone can help at all, it would be much appreciated. I've not seen it since, unfortunately.

Sounds like an Ichneumon wasp somethink like Amblyteles armatorius.

Just a wild guess here. I am seeing quite a few Strangalia maculata beetles now and they are quite big with pale yellow and black colouration. There is also a Wasp Beetle (Clytus arietis).

I can't think of anything else which is that big, except for the Horntail.
