A quick trawl of the internet later, and I'm reasonably happy with Chrysopilus cristatus as an ident. The wing venation looks right (always a good sign eh?)  |

Ah, wing venation - a good port of call in making identifications, so well done. However, Rhagionid venations are all identical I believe! Useful for confirming it is indeed a snipe, just not so good for individuals. We have several black ones too, I think... so confirmation may be via a microscope. |
