Fly identification please...

Can anyone put a name to this, or at least point me to the family. I'm still trying to get the hang of the diptera

Me too! I believe it's a Snipe Fly, family Rhagionidae. Not sure which...

Thanks for setting me on the right tracks Jason. A quick trawl of the internet later, and I'm reasonably happy with Chrysopilus cristatus as an ident. The wing venation looks right (always a good sign eh?)

Ah, wing venation - a good port of call in making identifications, so well done. However, Rhagionid venations are all identical I believe! Useful for confirming it is indeed a snipe, just not so good for individuals. We have several black ones too, I think... so confirmation may be via a microscope.
