| | | Is this a cleg? Mrs Tringa was painting close to Loch Tollaidh(about a mile or so south west of Poolewe) a couple of days ago and was visited by this fly. We both thought it was a type of cleg, but having looked at some of the photos on here I'm not so sure - it looks hairier than the clegs on the photos and the head thorax junction looks different.
Is it a cleg or not?

| | | Re: Is this a cleg? It is certainly a Tabanid fly... but not in the same genus as the regular "Cleg". This one is female Chrysops and it looks like C. relictus to me |

Even though these and the regular clegs hurt when they bite I have to admit finding them attractive insects, but that is probably because I don't suffer from any after effects of their bites. |
