| | | Clegs and Horseflies. Hi,
does anybody know of anything that can protect me from bites from clegs and horseflies when I am walking? Such as a spray or cream?! Clegs being my biggest fear I'm desperate!
Also does anybody know what predators eat clegs as their prey?
Hope someone can help!

| | | Re: Clegs and Horseflies. Loads of predators eat them lots of birds such as swallows, swifts etc, flycatchers, warblers. Other insects such as dragonflies and robberflies, not to mention spiders.
Not to sure on repellent but I agree they are bloody annoying. |

As do I. They are just starting to appear now. We have a river in the back garden and they are starting to drive me mad. The best thing I have is one of those fly swatters that look like a tennis racquet, which takes batteries and fries them. Very satisfactory

P.S. - found some on the usual auction site!

| | | Re: Clegs and Horseflies. When photographing in the woods I always use long trousers and a long sleeved shirt well buttoned up. But various flies can even bite through one layer of shirt material.
I'm always concerned that some of the anti repellant creams will put off the interesting species without adding much protection against the biters.
Did get some 'nice' photos of a sleepy Cleg a couple of days ago. But I fear the worst for the next time I am in that area! |

| | | Re: Clegs and Horseflies. Thereaction to these horrors is very variable, a pair of us used to do surveys on a very rushy field. Bites made me yelp, the other guy swelled up very badly. I could work with no more than some discomfort, Dave couldn't work there. The flies were so bad that they were like the "beard of bees" idea, but any breeze above a zephyr kept them away.
Zephyr, I haven't used that word for years. You could name a car with that.

They sell them in lots of shops Jim, I got them in one of those cheap book shops. They look a bit like a kids toy tennis racquet but with a fly in the middle, the batteries go in the handle.
