If you get bitten now, (by any insect), do you rub chilli on the actual bite mark?
They mainly go for my hands, usually going unnoticed while I'm concentrating on my camerawork, but I've also had a few on the neck & forehead. It's usually a couple of hours later before the allergic reaction starts, and it sometimes lasts for several days. Antihistamines & ammonia type medications don't really do me much good. - I had to have a series of injections after one particularly bad encounter.
(I don't fancy rubbing chilli all over my face/neck, as it would be all too easy to get transfered into eyes - but could potentially dab direct on the spot as an after bite remedy if that would work ).

Mike. | Hi Mike,
Yes I do rub chilli all around the bitten area, I have had a few recent bites, one which swelled badly. The chilli did help to clear it up quickly, as well as taking a lot of the pain out of it. Earlier in the season when midges were about on cooler days I was getting bitten around the eyebrows, hairline and ears as I had rubbed chilli on most of my scalp, I rubbed the chilli all around my hairline and over my eyebrows as well as my head, that stopped them! It doesn't get in your eyes unless you forget you have handled chilli and rub your eyes! Rub it anywhere that's not sensitive, you will soon find out if you have a sensitive area. |

| | | Re: Clegs and Horseflies. I got a cleg bite on Saturday on my wrist, I now have a swollen hand and swelling to just over half-way up my forearm.
I went to my GP, and I now have the outer margins of the swollen area marked in pen with strict instructions to get back to him if the swelling moves over the pen line by more than a couple of millimetres.
I also have a week long course of antibiotics as he thinks that the swelling is too severe to just be an allergic reaction, especially as I've been following previous instructions and treating the bite with a steroid cream since it happened.
It's not all doom and gloom though, on my way out I was speaking to a couple of people who have recommended I drink Tonic Water before going to areas with clegs, and drinking it afterwards if I get bitten. Apparently the Quinine in it reduces the severity of any bites.
As I'm at the point of trying just about anything, I'm going to give it a go, apparently adding Gin is completely optional. |
