Whose home is this
Came across this strange construction yesterday. Any ideas what made it/lives in it?

I would suggest the eumenid wasp Odynerus spinipes or (possibly) O. melanocephalus. Can you tell us where you found these and the adjacent habitat?

It was in a mound of clay on an open ride adjacent to ancient woodland containing beech and oak on one side and pine plantation on the other. I think the clay mound may have been an old wood ant mound flattened by the rain over winter. Between the ride and the pine was a twenty foot boundary of reeds, bracken and bramble.

It was in Brede High Woods situated in the Weald of Kent.
