Hornet impersonater?

Today on the way to the garage I heard an insect fly past. Thinking it was a the sound of a stag beetle. I turned to see this wasp-like insect 4-5cm in length. Now it wasn't a wasp or hornet, as the abdomain was the shape of those hard covered liquorish sweets you get. the first section of the body was black the joints of the legs to the body were yellow, and the large section of the body started black but was mainly yellow, with a spike the envy of many a pyrocantha.

Just curious as to it's name. It made no sound other than described.

Woodhamd, try Googling Woodwasp. (And never fear, the spike is an ovipositor, it is not a stinger )
