Note this was a female hence the long ovipositor the male doesn't have one your could have been a male so don't dismiss it yet. |

| | | Re: ID hornet like insect-moth ? hmmm...definitely not a sawfly, could be a dragonfly libellula depressa, I suppose but the images I have seen are clearly dragonflies ... don't think I could have mistaken one for a big waspish thing ! While reading other threads I noticed that having new wood in the house can bring larvae... we have just fitted new beams and joists so there is alot of pine/douglas fir around indoors. Food for thought. Anyway, today I saw my first swarm of bees while outdoors, I was so fascinated I forgot to get the children out of the way... luckily the bbq was smoking and the bees flew over and on their way ! |

| | Re: ID hornet like insect-moth ? Hi,
Just been looking for the same thing online as we had a similar sounding insect outside our house (thankfully! - it was freaking out the missus!) last night. We're in Southampton and this was literally knocking on the window to get in. I reckon ours was this - Hornet Moth Sesia apiformis - UKMoths - a hornet moth...makes sense...southern England 5cm long, looks like a hornet. Could be? | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
