In relation to the OPs question as to where all the Ladybirds are this year - did anyone else see the photo in yesterdays' Telegraph? - A farm near Chard in Somerset have had their biggest swarm in ten years of ladybirds - estimated to be up to 10million ladybirds
The 20acre site owners grow "eco-roofing" made of sedum and as the sedum grows the number of aphids which feed on it grows and hence the attraction
Our local park have just opened a new information centre which incorporates a sedum roof - I shall be watching with interest

I grow it in my flower borders along with loads of other wildflowers like meadow cranesbill, ox-eye daisy, field scabious, common mallow, etc, all mixed in with garden plants!

BK | Don't know about Sedum - its Nettles and Common Hogweed seed heads that have the zillions on in our neck of the woods
Interestingly the few black Harlequins seem to have their own square metre of nettle patch to themselves! - The 7 spots, well they 'know how to party' and really socialise in profusion. I wonder why?

| | | Re: Where are all the ladybirds this year? Our garden is now devoid of aphids,so much so I've had to release the lacewings I've been rearing - a few weeks ago the nettles were covered in them, now none.
Could these swarms be a hint of the mass swarming back in the ol' days (year?) when they flew in to sea and drowned due to lack of food? |
