That's where you'll find me |

| | | Re: Bumble-like flies.. Eeek - all bets are off then, as far as insect IDs go. Merodon equestris is still likely because I am sure it must have been transported around the world on bulbs but there are bound to be lookalike alternatives down there that we don't know about. |

Nice country! As Chris says though, I wouldn't like to say it is M. equestris with certainty - though as also said transportation is a good possibility... or even that this form is equestris/ bulborum, in case it's known as something different there. I'm sure it's OK to post ID requests here, but with the same token WAB has a sister site called Worldwide Wildlife and Environment Forum which has a good forum - a lot of us Brits are on there, too.
How's the weather in NZ this morning? Here, it's bright-ish but cold and about 14' in the sun. |

Of course I'm a little biased, I'm not native to here either in the last 170 years or so, gee ain't I getting ancient!
Yes. Merodon equestris is in New Zealand. It's an easily transported fly, a Bulb fly! I'm struggling to think what bulbs go from here to NZ, they usually come from the other direction. Could be in Amaryllis (Hippeastrum cultivars actually) which go from Holland to most countries in the world. Zootaxa, A conspectus of New Zealand flower flies (Diptera: Syrphidae) with ...
As far as the correct name goes, it does look like the name you gave it to me, and matches the one on diptera.info, that is a site you can trust where flies are concerned. |

Alien and Inva-sive species introduced with European colonization (Merodon equestris
| So it would appear this fly was brought by early European settlers. |

| | | Re: Bumble-like flies.. Thanks for everyone's helpful information. It looks like I'd be better off on the other site that Jason Green recommended. I didn't realise there were so many various types of bees and flies and how detailed the identification process would be.
Thanks so much JRsbugs for your information. Interesting to know about how the flies got here. I was wondering that as I was driving down the motorway yesterday. I mean, it's certainly a long way for them to fly
