| | | Re: More insects for ID please Hi Peter! 1. A cranefly - no idea of species 2. Possibly the nymph of a short-winged conehead 3. Maybe a Root maggot fly, Anthomyiidae family. 4. Looks like a dungfly, try Scathophaga sp., female. 5. Same as #3?

| | | Re: More insects for ID please 2 is a male Conocephalus nymph, don't think you can really tell which of the 2 coneheads- Short-winged + Long-winged it is yet. In the adult other than wing-length ( though exceptionally Short-winged has macropterous forms) the cerci shape varies between them; kinked in SW + straight in LW. |

I have attached a close-up of the Cranefly and also another insect I have never seen before and do not know where to start to identify it.
Cranefly body (Excluding most of the legs.
This insect appears to be missing a leg.

| | | Re: More insects for ID please Was it a large crane fly with dark spotting on the wings? I'm suspecting Tipula maxima or the smaller T. vittata.
But this is a suggestion not a positive ID. |

| | | Re: More insects for ID please Thank you Nutmeg. I have found this is an invasive species and have reported the sighting to the Harlequin Ladybird Survey site together with this photo as evidence.

It was quite large and, althougth it's wings are folded, you can see evidence of dark markings on the wings.

No 3 could be a Common Flesh Fly. The Root Flies are smaller than a house fly and this one was about the same size. What do you think?

| | | Re: More insects for ID please Could be, Peter - the fifth shot puts up a more convincing case for that, notably the abdomen shows a chequered pattern. The general colouring on the throrax looks kind of, off, for that though. Maybe someone else would care to offer their opinion!
It looks OK... do you have a dorsal? | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
