Gaudy looking fly

Stony Stratford, Bucks (20th May).

I initially thought this was the noon-day fly, Mesembrina meridiana which is very common in this area - but up close it looks quite different.

Help with identification appreciated as always:

I'm sure I photographed one of these last year Bruce and someone ID'd it for me, but I cant remember what it was now, not much help really

As I remember it was a sizable insect and didn't look that friendly

Assuming it was pretty big - I'd guess at Tachina fera.
