| | | Grasshopper nymph for ID please From rough grassland alongside the usual wood, S. Devon.
Can't decide about this one. I'm thinking Field Grasshopper, green form, or Woodland Grasshopper. But I could be wildly out here (it wouldn't be the first time). I've looked around but I can't find any decent nymph photos for comparison.
Any suggestions? |

| | | Re: Grasshopper nymph for ID please They are notoriously difficult to ID as nymphs right until they reach the final instar when they start to show some of the adult charactaristics.
Looking at this one I'd have to say that Meadow Grasshopper Chorthippus parallelus is the most likely, although I can't be certain.
Have a look at A photographic guide to the Grasshoppers and Crickets of Britain and Ireland by Evans and Edmonson, its an excellent book for sorting through Grasshopper and Cricket ID's |

| | | Re: Grasshopper nymph for ID please Sorry, I cannot help you Geoff. But just out of interest, why did you rule out Meadow Grasshopper?
EDIT sorry, posted at the same time as Steve.

| | | Re: Grasshopper nymph for ID please Nymphs are never that easy, but I'd suggest pronotal keel pattern is wrong for Field. I think it may be Meadow, but I'm not certain. |

| | | Re: Grasshopper nymph for ID please My thinking here (although not very experienced with these species) is that the brown hindlegs looked wrong for a Meadow. I have seen Field Grasshoppers here last year and the area would appear to be correct for the Woodland.
But, as suggested, the keels don't quite match and nymphs are always difficult, which is why I sought advice from more experienced people. Being on rough grass adjoining grazing fields and alongside an estuary, a Meadow Grasshopper is quite possible.
Thanks for the suggestions. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
