Hi
Can anyone give me some pointers on the identity of this one please. Photographed today in a wetland area, amongst Juncus, purple moor grass etc. At first sight I thought it was an ichneumon what with that thin waist and the dark wings but looking closer it clearly is a fly. It was quite a large beastie, approx 15-20mm

One of the Robber fly species, maybe Dioctria linearis. |

Hi Steve,
Both Dioctra linearis and D. rufipes have mainly back rear legs, but your individual has uniform orange-black ones. I'll say Dioctria sp. |

Thanks both,
Dioctria looks bang on for genus, I've been looking on "Diptera.info" and D. oelandica is looking a strong possibility with the orange hind legs. Will check it out more thoroughly tomorrow.

I posted the pic on Diptera.info, and the verdict there was D. oelandica, quite an impressive creature and the group is a new one for me. Thanks again for the pointers,
