| | | Re: Swarm of bees A friend of mine had the same problem a couple of weeks ago and he was quite scared at the beginning with the sheer numbers of bees flying about in his garden. He was quite interested though, and after calling a local beekeeper, enjoyed watching the different behaviours of the honeybees in search of a suitable place for a hive. He said there were bees inspecting every nook and cranny on his house walls and nearby trees. Then they decided to settle at the top of an elder and most of them formed a round ball of bees. The beekeper arrived, and they climbed the tree, cleared the branches around the swarm and cut the branch they were sitting on. He hit one end of the branch on top of a wooden hive she had brought and most of the bees fell in. She put the lid on and my friend watched in fascination how many bees sat on the entrance of the hive with their bottoms in the air and fanninf their wings, with the purpose of driving the smell of the queen inside the hive outside to attract the rest of the swarm. This was very effective and in a little while they were all in. So, enjoy!

| | | Re: Swarm of bees Just enjoy watching them, it's probably only temporary. We had one in work last year, stayed overnight and into next afternoon then dispersed in seconds. They just kind of hang around while scouts look for a new nest. Here's a pic of ours, never been seen since

| | | Re: Swarm of bees A good sized swarm for a nucleus hive. They would be worth a bit now, so someone's lost out.
A swarm of bees in May is worth a load of hay,
A swarm of bees in June is worth a silver spoon,
But a swarm of bees in July
Is not worth a fly! (Old rhyme) | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
