| | | Unknown fly? Hello, having no clue about this i registered to this site.
I found what i think is a fly in the house that i have never seen before.
Unfortunatly the camera i have is insufficent for a descent photo.
The fly is very hairy black upper then yellow on the rear segments, it has very large legs and large eyes it was also very noisy and high pitched in flight! I have no idea so sorry about the lack of information! |

| | | Re: Unknown fly? From what i have read it can't be a wasp, only one set of wings, no visible stinger and sorry about the lack of technical wording mouth parts like a straw rather than jaws! Ill try and get a photo! |

| | | Re: Unknown fly? To me, I can't think of many muscid flies with yellow abdominal markings? Long legs too, maybe an ichneumon wasp, or a cranefly which is in the same Classification order as your Muscid possibility. I really need a photo or drawing please! |

| | | Re: Unknown fly? It sounds like a Syrphid fly.
I have black with red tail Volucella bombylans about just now, as well as Volucella bombylans var. plumata which has yellow and black hairs on it but on the thorax, with yellow marks on the upper abdomen, black hairs and a white tail.
The description of mouth parts like a straw seem to fit too! The tongue comes out from under a strange cone-like face.
