| | | ID This shed find please?..... Dear all; I would welcome help in identifying this find in a shed. It was under some tools in a dark corner - location, near Heathrow today. Apologies if it's obvious to everyone, I am a beginner to the subject. Thanks. |

| | | Re: ID This shed find please?..... I think it is the start of a wasp’s nest, unlike Honey Bees, Wasps colonies do not survive the winter, only the Queens hibernate and in the spring build a small nest with just a few cells. Here she lays her first few eggs which she raises herself. These become the first workers in that year’s colony and on emerging after pupation add more cells and outer walls where they look after the next wave of grubs and so the colony grows. I think what you have found is that first starter nest from a failed colony.

| | | Re: ID This shed find please?..... Thanks to all for your responses and the warm welcome; I am pleased to know what it was; it is a work of art to see; only around 2.5cm high & wide but double walled with the cells at the centre, perfect in its construction. Thanks again......
p.s. this is from the village of Sipson at Heathrow - otherwise known as the proposed terminal 6 / 3rd Heathrow runway, maybe if we can find something unique then the goverment & BAA won't be allowed to flatten the whole village.... | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
