| | | Staggies Anyone else been seeing Stag Beetles yet this year. I had two in my garden on thursday evening, which were the first for the year. Also the first time I've had two males at the same time.
Cheers,

| | | Re: Staggies Well your nearest hot spot is the Severn Valley, otherwise you need to get to the New Forest, southern London, or North Kent areas. These are the population main areas in Britain. Other than that, go out on a warm, preferably humid evening in May or early June. If you know where they are known to be then it makes it easier, but males generally bumble around like clockwork toys trying to find females by the lure of their pheromones so could be anywhere within their field of distribution. Contrary to popular belief they are not attracted to light like Cockchafers.

| | | Re: Staggies I haven't seen any for many years.
The Hertfordshire beetle recorder told me that Cheshunt is a 'hotspot' for them. Many years ago I saw them in West Drayton, near Uxbridge, but I suspect they're not there now.
We get the lesser stag beetle in the garden, but they're a puny sluggish imitation of the 'real thing''!

| | | Re: Staggies Hi all,
I found my first one this year on thursday which was pretty surprising as it was rather breezy!
Normally it has to be "flying ant " type weather.
Have reported him with the great stag hunt site.Heres hoping for a good year for them!
I will be keeping my records of all found be me this year at this link Steve Hale images.com | Stag Beetles (Lucanus Cervus)...
Regards
Steve
