some are obviously blue tailed but there are scarce in the area?

2,4 and 5 are blue tailed.
3 might be scarce blue-tailed, but it's not a species I know, and the books aren't handy. looks good from memory. |

Janet  | I'd agree. Also, I was looking at the pterostigma which is elongate in I.elegans, in I.pumilio it is more rounded.

If you think you might have a female Scarce Blue-tails, I. pumilio, one feature that will quickly help you eliminate the possibility is the fact that the dorsal side of the 8th abdomen section is always dark in that species. All of your photos show individuals with a pale blue 8th segment which means that they can only be 'Common' Blue-tails. Remember that some of the mature forms of female I. elegans also lack the tell tale blue top to this segment though! Males should be easier because the 8th segment is only half blue, as is half of segment 9 - so the 'blue tail' is nearer to the tip of the abdomen.
