| | | Life and death Stony Stratford, Bucks.
Photographing insects (and similar inverts) we see these life and death dramas being played out every day on almost every shrub and every fence. Sometimes as I watch I have to remind myself that this isn't TV it's real life....very real for the two parties involved. Life for one and death for the other!

| | | Re: Life and death It is a fact of life and death, as you say Bruce, life for one and death for the other. I'm finding my garden is turning into a slaughter house, partly fascinating and partly horrifying!
Humans do it too but out of sight.....so glad I'm a vegetarian!

You're right about it being horrifying and fascinating at the same time. I find this to be even more so when I'm watching up close through the viewfinder and can see the eyes of the prey .

| | | Re: Life and death The advantages of macro I agree can be a little too graphic! I had several female Coenosia flies I saw in one day eating their prey, some had just been caught and were strugggling, makes you feel like saving them but you can't! They are still around but there must have been a fresh batch of them.
That's apart from the other insects which eat insects! I have a lot of tiny Platypalpus flies, different speces, they vary from just over 2mm to 3mm in length. It's amazing to see them eat a wasp about their own size, I would never have thought I could see them so well through the viewfinder!
As a result of seeing these tiny things looking so big, my perception of size has changed dramatically! I first have to gauge the size mentally, but often question my estimations after seeing them magnified. What once looked extremely small to me I now think of as quite large!
My worst 'experience' was seeing a huge fresh Scathophaga stercoraria eating an older puny looking one, I have a couple of pics which still horrify me but if you wish I will upload them!
Warning to those with a weak stomach, like me! |

| | | Re: Life and death I think that is it, cannabilism seems to be a no no but humans have done, and in places still do that too!
I reason with myself that the old worn out fly was not meant to be wasted in nature and would have died soon anyway, but to see it struggle while being worked on the other end was ghastly. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
