Ichneumon?

Had a visit from this beasty today, about 1 1/2 inches long and a nasty buzzing sound, I swiftly shepherded it out the window!

Some sort of Ichneumon I think with those red legs.

Looks like a Crane Fly to me, no idea what species though; I’ll leave that to the experts.

Yes that is possible. The waist appears a bit fat for an Ichneumon and the legs are possibly a bit long for a Sawfly.

So perhaps have a look at some Crane Flies, maybe Dictenidia or Ctenophora families. Try here first Diptera.info - Photo Albums: Tipulidae

Thanks both, looks like it was a Ctenophora elegans (male). And there was me thinking Crane Flies were Daddy Long-legs

Daddy longlegs is another come name given to crane flies. there is also a spider that shares this common name, so really you were right in thinking that
