Hi!
My little boy spotted this insect earlier today and I thought it looked unusual so took a couple of snaps. I was guessing that it was a bumblebee, but haven't had any luck identifying it from the pics on the BBCT website. Would really love to know what it was...

It does look like Eristalis intricaria, a very colourful one at that! They do seem to be variable, the ones I have had are mostly black with just a little orange, with a white tail of course. Diptera.info - Photo Albums: Eristalis intricaria (female) (2)

Thanks so much guys. I had a feeling I was being thick and that it perhaps wasn't a bee after all since I couldn't spot it on the BBCT website. I don't know all that much about bugs, (obviously!)...but I'm willing to learn |

We all have to start somewhere. The first thing you should look for when starting out is the eyes, that's the give away. To see what I mean look at a few pics of flies as well as bees and wasps. | | |
