I agree, four-spotted for me too. Do you have a shot of its back, Norman? The anal appendages should give a clue as to its sex.

Yes, Four-spot, no other British species has the black markings halfway along the leading edge of the wings (at the point where the wing bends slightly).

It's a male - take a close look underneath the second abdominal segment!

I read that lone females near water are harassed by the males, so if this shot was near water, then I would have guessed male for this reason alone.
