| | | Black Flying Insect with Long Ovipositor Hi,
Have just found this insect on our window, its body is approx 35mm long with red legs and a 30mm ovipositor. Can anyone advise what it is please?

| | | Re: Black Flying Insect with Long Ovipositor Thanks, it does look very similar although the one I've seen does not have the white spots on the body - could mine be the male or perhaps a juvenile? |

| | | Re: Black Flying Insect with Long Ovipositor It may not be the same species but something very similar. I'm fairly sure it's one of the Ichneumon family.
Someone will be along soon with more experience than me. You might have to wait a while due to the Bank Holiday! |

| | | Re: Black Flying Insect with Long Ovipositor It's a wood wasp I believe, the long spike extending from the back end is it's ovipositor, meaning it's female. It uses this to inject eggs deep into trees, wood, etc. I'm not too sure of which species, though.
Oh, and Sprules - welcome to WAB!

| | | Re: Black Flying Insect with Long Ovipositor Hi
I'd agree with an ichneumon and one of the Pimplinae species. Can't really see enough detail but Dolichomitus imperator might be worth looking at.

| | | Re: Black Flying Insect with Long Ovipositor Thankyou all for your help, having looked at pictures of Dolichomitus Imperator I'm sure this is the 'mini beast' (as my kids call them) in question.
