| | | Mating ritual of scorpion flies The female is holding a nuptial gift in the form of a dead fly which has been given to her by the male ( larger gifts are preferred & result in more eggs being laid ). After accepting the gift copulation takes place & can last an hour or more, during which time the female feeds on the gift.

| | | Re: Mating ritual of scorpion flies I believe Janet to be correct in her ID, I photographed the same situation and though they are very similar i think the difference between opaca and tessellata is the leg colouring, i'm almost sure that tessellata has black legs.
