I'm sure I've seen one of these before, but I can pinpoint where, so I could do with a little help to satisfy my curiosity!

Parasitised aphid, is what comes to my mind. Saw some on an oak today, whilst trying to get some gall photos perched on a step ladder.

Hi Nick,
"Mummified" aphid, parasitised by a wasp grub.
I only know because I found one a week or so ago. Distinctive aphid on bramble.

If you keep an eye on it, a circular hole should appear on top, where the parasitic wasp escapes ... |
