Hedge-Eating Fly (?) for ID
Good evening, hope all are well and looking forward to the weekend!

Just wondering if anyone could help with identifying the following critters.

Our area has a lot of similar privet hedges, and since we've moved in we've noticed that they've been besieged by what seem to be flies of some kind.

They leave small holes and nibbles in the leaves and pretty much destroy hedges within a week.

Any ideas on what they are and how to encourage them to move on would be great!

Hi Bugged, welcome to WAB!

The fly is in fact a wasp, a Privet Sawfly, Macrophya punctumalbum. Nice looking insect! It will be active between May and July, so the hedges should recover... the adults eat nectar and pollen, not leaves IMO, so it may be the larvae? It's not an area I know too much of. Sorry!

We'll weather the storm and avoid taking any more bad photos showing the seemingly pixel printed finish on the path tiles
