| | | Re: Black aphids? and black bee ...agree, and yes, they are indeed aphids. There are a number of black species, so all I can say is it's perhaps an Aphis sp.
What plant was it on? Oh, and interesting to see the individual halfway-up on the nearest left giving birth, and the shed skin too! |

Jason. Shed skin, is that what that is. I wish I had noticed the giving birth at the time, would have got a closer shot. No idea of plant, but here's another pic. Any idea what that clear film stuff is on the plant? Thanks. Les. |

[/url] | It's the calyx which has been sheltering the flower buds which are now emerging. The plant looks a bit like chard (a pseudo-spinach with a lot of names) - I think it's a Beta sp.. |

| | | Re: Black aphids? and black bee If it is Beta species then they will be Aphis fabae - certainly look like it. |

| | | Re: Black aphids? and black bee ...a better species than what? Never mind...
So, Aphis fabae, the Black Bean aphid. Aphids give birth like that a lot, so let us know if you get a closer one |

Jason, I'll be going back tomorrow and will seek out a Black Bean aphid giving birth. |

| | | Re: Black aphids? and black bee Great shots all the same Les! I got pics of something snakefly-ish eating an aphid today!
The bee looks like Melecta albifrons, one I have yet to see.
