The Mayfly !

hi guys !

i am fairly new to observing hatches and flies but im getting right into it

The one thing that i am looking forward to is seeing the first of the mayflies !
I live near to a river so I think I am in a good position to see them .

Can anyone tell me when i would be likely to see the first of the mayflies here in central scotland ? Iv been told it can be june ?

Hi, I also live in central Scotland and have a river at the bottom of my garden. They are usually out in early June but it will depend on weather conditions, but you will know when they are out as the river will have clouds of them.

ron1863 , last week i saw a huge [ or what i thought was a huge hatch] of olive dun. In comparison what is a mayfly hatch like compared to what i have seen ?

I think it depends on the water and it's condition. Some rivers have massive hatches of Mayfly and that's when anglers are assured of a catch, as trout gorge on them.
On my river there are lots of them, especially since the water was cleaned up, but nothing like some other waters.

Alot depends on species, you will get some species emerging in winter. Although as has been said there is more diversity and abundance in the summer.
