| | | One metallic and one very small fly for ID I took both of the following photos at Three Mile Water, Newtownabbey, N.Ireland on April 13th 2009. The first metallic fly was very hairy and the second fly was much smaller about 2mm in height. I was well pleased even to get a photo of it as it was a hand held shot. Help with IDs would be great.
Thanks, John. |

| | | Re: One metallic and one very small fly for ID Hi John, I see this one every year, a stunning and impressive fly! I got a pic on my windowsill this year, where I usually see it and it's a difficult one against white but I got one reasonable before it shot off.
I think it's a Tachinid fly Gymnochaeta viridis.
#2 not sure but Hybotidae has a hump, need to check that out as some other families also have humps.

| | | Re: One metallic and one very small fly for ID #2 has the type of feeding tube as in Empis, Empis chioptera looks a good bet. There's a pic of a male on diptera.info (Empididae in Gallery), it looks small but has thickened sections at the bottom of front legs. There's a hung up and pickled female on micropics which does look close but not sure about those legs. |

| | | Re: One metallic and one very small fly for ID I've been looking around, #2 could be a Rhamphomyia sp. but I think this one is going to be difficult, still Empididae though. INSECTES15ter-2 |
