my contribution to the thread - I think they were building up to mating? They were following each other all over the patio and nibbling at each other! |

I have discovered that the Field Studies Council publish a key to the Land Snails in the British Isles ( FSC Publications : Land snails in the British Isles (2nd edition)) so I've ordered a copy. Still nothing on slugs, although there is a Collins field guide to the Land Snails of Britain and North-West Europe which was published in 1979 (ISBN 000219676X) and apparently covers slugs too. There are a few copies available on the second-hand market so I might treat myself. As with all 30 year old field guides some of the info will undoubtedly be out of date but there doesn't seem to be anything more current available.
Found this one in Clumber at the weekend...
Probably Arion ater agg. again but there is no sign of the orange stripes on the foot.

| | | re: Slug or snail of the day Thanks Fauna! Netuser60 posted that link too and it's very useful. I took the plunge and ordered a secondhand copy of the Collins field guide to the Land Snails of Britain and North-West Europe which does indeed cover slugs but doesn't contain keys. By combining the book with the published key for snails and the pdf one for slugs I've ended up with a pretty comprehensive resource.

| | | re: Slug or snail of the day After a dearth of slugs in my garden during the summer I finally found this beauty...
And thanks to the book and key I can be pretty confident that it's a Limax flavus.

Finally found my camera, so here is the slug. M.tenellus are best found feeding on fungi, apparently Russula species are their favorite?
Also found these Anisus vortex shells being used by a Cased Caddis, in an unlabled sample jar. |
