Rather an old image, but I'm still no wiser as to the ID of this bright slug.
Found in a marsh habitat feeding on horse tails.

Les | Hi Les...
Not 100%, but this beauty is probably Arion subfuscus.

| | | Re: Slug or snail of the day This one *points* because it was large-ish and orangey-slimed rather than clear or white, and I have not met many of these with an orange slime.
I know the colour of the liquid is important to id process, but have not got as far as that. Also, image is shaky, sorreh.
And I also like the way it looks as though it has a thumb print on its mantle.

D | Hi Dannica.
This slug looks like a Limacus sp, the specimen is darker to the ones i'm used to seeing, so i'm a bit unsure of which. L. maculatus can have yellow to orange slime, where as L. flavus is yellow. But your specimen seems to be more characteristic to L. flavus.?
Sorry i cant be of more help.
ps. the second slug looks like its Arion hortensis agg ( A. hortensis/distinctus).

| | | Re: Slug or snail of the day A slightly different slant on snail of the day, I hope it counts!
I was on the beach, near the lifeboat station on Hayling Island today & while Adam was checking the scope for birds, I was combing the beach for anything of interest.
I picked up a lovely shell to take home for Hollie but it made me jump when I turned it over.
It still had it's owner in residence.
A live Common Whelk.
Silly me, forgot to take a photo.

| | | Re: Slug or snail of the day My three year old spotted this little snail which was crossing the pavement, I took it for a juvenile garden snail and picket it up to save it from a likely death when I realised it had a keeled shell and rough surface. What is it?

| | | Re: Slug or snail of the day Well, working through the key, I think it's one of two species. If the shell is over 10mm wide then I'd say it's Hygromia cinctella. The height of the spire is pushing me towards that species too. But if it's under 10mm it could be a juvenile Theba pisana. The shape of the mouth is pushing me in that direction.
I'm fairly sure it's one of the two and, with a gun to my head, I'd go for H. cinctella.

P.s. You can put the gun away now!

| | | Re: Slug or snail of the day Thanks a lot Dave. I am familiar with Theba pisana and I have never seen adults about. In contrast, if this is the snail's adult size I can have easily missed it by failing to notice its keel and taken it by a garden snail juvenile, so I am with you it is more likely to be Hygromia cinctella. This species also fits very well several photos I saw on the web. I love to find a new species in my doorstep even if it appears to have been accidentally introduced. I will keep an eye on it!

| | | Re: Slug or snail of the day I guess the current dry weather is keeping this thread slow. While moving some pots I came across these sleeping beauties within a few minutes. Although in my mind they were Limax flavus, now I am not sure they are the same species at all. IDs welcome!
