| | | re: Slug or snail of the day Had a good day in my local woods today. Mostly went looking for centipedes, which i found in good numbers along with several species of Carabids. I did manage to find a few snails and slugs, one of which has got to be my all time favourite, The Lemon Slug Malacolimax tenellus.
I also found my first for VC41 The Durham Slug Arion flagellus. |

I'm not very good at explaining things, but this one will have less rows of tubercles between the lateral bands (this one had 7) to the other larger Arions. Plus the ones in my area seem to have a distinct colouring that helps me with my initial first step, though you can't make it out in the photo i have used. I will try and get a better photo soon.
Perhaps take a look at this link, might make more sence than i do :: MolluscIreland :: Land and Freshwater :: Species page
I have also sent pm with other info... |

| | | re: Slug or snail of the day I suppose it won't hurt if i put this other link up on here...its in PDF form. http://www.npws.ie/en/media/NPWS/Pub...2030-11-09.pdf
The slugs start from page 116, A. flagellus is on page 119. If you look at the photo...the majority of specimens in my area will look like the one on the right. |

| | | re: Slug or snail of the day Hiya everyone,
I reckon all my slugs and snails are still cwtched up somewhere waiting for Spring ,I haven't seen a sign of any around.
This is a snail I found last Autumn on the mountainside behind our house,I can't find it in my little book .It was approx 4 cms.I'm positive someone will know.
Thanks Barbara . |

Thanks Barbara . | Hi Barbara,
I think what you have there is the yellow unbanded form of Cepaea hortensis, the white-lipped banded snail. These little chaps are extremely variable in shell colour and pattern.
