Identification?

Hello, I'm new here and hoping someone can anyone identify either of these? The caterpillar I found about a month ago, my children brought it in for a look but we couldn't identify it and put it back (in the compost heap) where i found it.

The fly was sunning itself on my fence about a week ago.

#1: No idea - but well done on putting it back outside!

#2: Bee-fly, B. major most likely. Family Bombyliidae

The fly is a Bee-fly, Bombylius major. I'm impressed that you knew it was a fly!

Someone might know the caterpillar if you have a closer shot of it.

Great, we're half way there. I don't have a closer image of the caterpillar. I thought it might have come off a foxglove. I found another a week or so later.
