| | | Beetle with very large back legs Northants garden Yew tree - 20th March. Length 2.5-3mm.
Odd looking little beetle - I wonder why its back legs are so large? Help with identification appreciated. Climbing vertically (taken from above) Looking down into pot

| | | Re: Beetle with very large back legs A quick look suggests a Chrysomelidae, a Flea beetle, Bruce. I'll look into it ASAP.
It may be a Psylliodes sp., this genus seem to have big thighs from the site I use... this really isn't an ID - more an avenue for further research perhaps!

| Those legs are made for jumping - it's a 'flea-beetle'! |

| | | Re: Beetle with very large back legs Thanks for the partial ID guys.
Spent an interesting but unsuccessful hour Googling on flea-beetle and Alticini and with such a huge number of species am not feeling at all optimistic about getting an id. However I did find this website that contains some excellent reference images (however not exclusive to the UK). List of subfamilies

| | | Re: Beetle with very large back legs Maybe someone will get you further - maybe not. Frustrating I know - I have plenty of ' xxx.sp' and ' Chrysomelidae members'!
I'm sure if either of us happen upon an ID we'll let you know Bruce |

| | | Re: Beetle with very large back legs I usually Google on the info you guys give me as I'm interested in finding out general behaviour and life-cycle info about the insect (at whatever level possible) - even if my search has to be on a general name like flea-beetle.
For me, while it's great when I can get a species id, the important thing is to get close enough so that I can understand something of the animal I've photographed.
