| | | Lesser House-fly maybe? Saw this one feeding on forsythia this afternoon...
He sure is a messy eater!
He's the right size for a lesser house-fly and the wing venation looks good but the eyes don't look right.
This crop is probably my best shot for ID purposes...
Any ideas?

| | | Re: Lesser House-fly maybe? Thanks Laurence, I didn't think lesser housefly was right but couldn't come up with anything better.
How about this one?
This time the eyes do look right for lesser housefly but I'm still not sure...

| | | Re: Lesser House-fly maybe? Me again, with a few more I can't pin down starting with this one...
Is that a bunch of parasites having a feed just behind the back legs?
Possibly the same species...
I think this one is a different species but I have a faint memory of someone saying that the eyes meeting at the top or not is a sexual characteristic so I suppose these could be male and female of the same species...
Lastly this one on my window sill...

| | | Re: Lesser House-fly maybe? Hi Dave
Your flies are Anthomyiidaes, though I can't really get further. They are mites perhaps just hitching a lift as opposed to 'using' it. Your last is a bluebottle I think, the thorax looks OK for that. The yellow face makes me think of the genus Cynomya??? Really not sure, someone else may say different!

| | | Re: Lesser House-fly maybe? Hi again Dave, RE: The last fly, above...
I saw the same myself today... turned out to be Calliphora vicina. Look out for a small orange marking on the side of the thorax nearest the head, and the lower-half of the face to be orange - as is yours |
