| | | Male leafhopper - face-on view I thought some of you might be interested in seeing this face-on pic of a male Idiocerus herrichi as it shows the dark swellings at the end of the antennae that identifies it as a male. I was also surprised to see that there were two smaller "prongs" at the base of each antenna.
Pic was taken yesterday at Stony Stratford, Bucks. Length is 6mm.

| | | Re: Male leafhopper - face-on view Thanks Jason and Arp .
This pic was taken by the nature reserve car park. Once he'd spotted me the hopper never stopped moving (towards me??). It must have looked really odd as I walked backwards with my chin on the fence rail, firing the shutter every time I thought the hopper had moved into focus.
"There's that crazy guy again photographing the car park fence ".

| | | Re: Male leafhopper - face-on view Nice shot Bruce, the swellings at the bases of the antennae are called the antennal setae. The males really have hairy faces don't they |

| | | Re: Male leafhopper - face-on view Thanks for that info. Tristan, I hadn't realised that it was just the male that had the bristly chin .
Btw, is the word "setae" pronounced se'tee or see'tee?

Bruce | The e is long (see-tee) - females do have hairs but they are much less extensive than this |

Thanks Tristan - I find that an ability to "name" something can sometimes be helpful when I'm observing an insect in the field.

That is a fantastic shot! What size was the Leafhopper? Your setup with the extension tube certainly does a great job!
ps, I wonder if an extension tube can be added to a teleconverter!
