There seems to be a number of different species with similar look/behaviour, although I'm not at all sure which might occur in Britain.

The other day a Hemaris fuciformis from Switzerland was shown here.

I saw one of these humming bird hawk moths yesterday, 16/08/10 at the National Trust property called Hinton Ampner in Hampshire. I wish I had a camera but didn,t. I didn't know what it was until I discovered this site. Richard.
