Fritillary ID please

Taken in Haldon Forest on Sunday with Mully.couldnt get very close or the wing completely open hope someone can recognise it for me please

Well it's a lovely fritillary-as to which, difficult. The wing patterns are so varied. It looks like it's on gorse and bramble, so that may be a clue. I think you need one of the butterfly people to help out here CB-not me!! WW

I would say it was a Dark Green Fritillary (Argynnis aglaja)

I think this is a tatty Silver Washed Fritillary. Look at the underwing for these large British fritillaries. Dark Green and High Brown (v. rare) have a very different underwing to Silver Washed.

In the first picture you can just make out the characteristic stripes of the underwing on the Silver Washed (actually seen through the upper wing because of the bright sunlight).

Always nice to see!
