I initially thought Machimus atricapillus (Kite tailed robberfly?). I believe the species you suggested are one and the same. I hope i'm right here?

Jason, you need Stubbs' book on Soldierflies and allied families. | I agree with that. However, habitat/location may help here since cingulatus is generally a much more local sp on heathland. Where was it photographed? |

| | | Re: Robber fly strangely enough, I have never recorded atricapillus around Barnsley, but there is one record of cingulatus from a waste-ground site (unfortunately not a female which would have been useful in this instance) |

| | | Re: Robber fly The photo was taken at Llandegfedd reservoir where i work (South Wales). The surrounding area is mostly Woodland and Pasture, as far as i'm aware there is no Heath in the immediate area. There is an area of Heath further up in Blaenavon, but this may be to far away?
