Spotted today on black thorn (2m above ground, wing tip to tip 25mm).
I believe it is Erannis defoliaria the mottled umber (male), this one
lacking any banding seen in its other form.

That's what it looks like to me too J.P. I haven't seen one yet, but if there's any around I hope they have the decency to come to my window so I can get some pics!

I seem to be in luck at finding moths when picking up sticks.
This looks like Epirrita dilutata (November moth).

Looks like a Winter moth to me Operophtera brumata
