| | | some form of beetle hi i'm new here and dont know much about insects except for the fact that i have never seen one of these beetles or have i ever seen one this size in my life in fife, not that i'v really looked but if anyone could help me identify this so i know its not some imported insect from the last bag of fruit i bought unfortunatly i have only my mobile phone to take a picture which will be very low quality image i will add the picture shortly but if someone could tell me what information you need for identification i will try and find out, what i can tell is:
1 1/2 inch long
black
6 legs
2 antenna
destinctly has a head and neck and good movement of it
the legs stop halfway down the body the rest is just armor plated abdomen to the tip of the body which has 2 tiny spikes protruding from the tip, it also has rather large mandibles which is the reason why i hesitate to touch this insect it is atm in a glass tumbler which it surprisingly can scale without much problem and apparently can hang upside down from the book i just placed on the top of this glass
so if someone could help me out i would be greatful, while i go put this into a better container

| | | Re: some form of beetle Firstly, welcome to WAB.
Couple of questions:
Is the beetle completely black or are the any variations in colour ?
How wide is it ?
Any other info that may help, ie, shape of antenna, armour on legs etc ?
Have you browsed through the insect Gallery to see if you can spot anything similar ?

Endquote
Wise decision - Devil's Coach Horse Beetles can give you a painful nip, and since they feed on unattractive stuff, and rarely clean their teeth, it's best to keep your fingers away from them. Though, truth to tell, I've never heard of anyone coming to serious harm from one!

| | | Re: some form of beetle sorry guys no pic possable all the cameras i have will give you a very distant picture or a close up black blob which you can just about destinguish the legs so its its pointless to show a picture but a google search for "Devil's Coach Horse Beetle" will show good quality images of the culprit, nasty looking creature when it raises its abdomen like a scorpion i was sure it was something that had been travelling with the banannas i reciently bought but thanks for the help again peeps | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
