Some winter hoverflies feeding on a sugar/honey/ sprullina mix I sprayed onto a camelia bush.
#1 Episyrphus balteatus, #2 Syrphus ribesii

This is interesting. Firstly I did really realise hoverflies were still around at this time of year. And I didn't know you could attract them. It's a pleasure to see them, reminds me of warmer days.

I don't recall seeing Hovers in Winter either. Interesting information. They're pretty insects but I always have trouble explaining to my youngest that they're not Wasps and don't sting.

I might be lucky, being on the South Coast, but can normally find a few of these if it's sunny during the winter with air temps above about 4.C.
