| | | Re: Xylota genus? Agreed, I find the inner thigh's red patch a good confirmation point but they're quite distinctive anyway!!
Oxy - You say ' Syritta pipiens - not too far from Xylota'. I take it you're saying that as they're from the same tribe, Xylotini? BTW, what does the tribe part mean? I'm really looking into scientific groups at the moment and is becoming easier to understand |

| | | Re: Xylota genus? That's it, tribe Xylotini, one division higher than genus; in the sub-family Milesiinae (just looked that up ) |

| | | Re: Xylota genus? So to use the analogy of human families: Xylota genus is the surname, the species pipiens is the christian name - and Tribe is like... if applicable grandparents, in terms of biology as opposed to just hierarchical? Sorry, this must seem a bit odd-sounding actually; but it's just a way to understand something less familiar...

| | | Re: Xylota genus? Not sure that you can push the human relationships analogy too far, Jason, without getting a bit confused; I remember when I started with hoverflies in 1982 finding the taxonomic divisions somewhat mysterious. I'm certainly no expert in this field, but I just think of tribes as consisting of related genera.
Sub-families consist of related tribes etc. Why a certain taxon is placed where it is, is the domain of professional taxonomists and will depend on all kinds of factors. Perhaps someone will come in with a few ideas on this. |

| | | Re: Xylota genus? Of course Oxy, thanks for your help on this!
I have identified around 330+ species, birds, wildflowers, etc. but mainly invertebrates. A majority of these being flies and am now in the process of creating a database. I am dividing the flies into groups, first off with the Superfamilies as chunks, I.E. Oestroidea then grouping internally bluebottles, greenbottles, tachinids, anything in the Oestroidea and sorting them according to the individual family, I.E. Calliphoridae's then Sarcophagidae, etc - if this sounds right... |
