wasps

Today while taken kitchen waste to compost bin watched at least six wasps flying around my ivy flowers was wondering if anyone else as spotted any?

I saw one last week, was a worker Vespula vulgaris its by far the latest ive ever seen one round here.

TBs - I believe it's more likely to be V. germanica or D. media. They have later flight periods.

is this common wasp? Will try and take photos for id but they were at the top of ivy that is swollowing my apple tree

I seem to recall discussing this before. D. media is long finished (in common with other Dolichovespula species that build exposed nests).

Male Vespula vulgaris and V. germanica are still around in my garden, and I suspect that is about it until the next spring.

Yes seen a few around and one very nice, very fluffy bumble-bee!

I saw a wasp yesterday, the first one for some weeks. I didn't get a good look at it but I would say it was a Common.
How do you identify a German Wasp? Are they the ones that get on my sun lounger first thing in the morning?

German Wasp: Vespula germanica (V. germanica)
Median Wasp: Delichovespula media (D. media)

If not, then V. vulgaris is the most common, the german wasp being less common but widely distributed and the Median wasp being a UK-inhabitant since about the 80's.

Strangely in our garden we only seem to get Vespula germanica as when I have taken photos it is always this species, I believe you can tell the difference to Vespula vulgaris by the face markings

Yes john thank you I did mean that I was unsure of the latin names
