Where are the wasps

I have to say, ignorance may be bliss. About 20 months ago we had builders in to knock a window out to create patio doors. They took up some of the floorboards and we found three wasps nests, each the size of a football, underneath - and this was just the ones we could see! No sign of activity, however, but plenty of deaders lying about. We just replaced the floorboards and have seen no sign of life since. Just to add though, that here in this region of North Yorks there has been very little wasp activity this year with the exception of a few 'sleepy' ones last week.
