| | | Small Skipper? Hi all ... I think this could be a Small Skipper – does anyone agree / disagree? |

If you look close at the tip of the nearest antenne, it is orange (I d/l pic and zoomed in just to be sure) If it was black it would have been an Essex Skipper. |

Which would have been a good spot, as I took this pic in Shropshire!!
Thanks for the confirmation, aeshna .... |

| | | Re: Small Skipper? I am probably not the person to respond to this as it is only this summer that I have started to take my butterfly watching seriously .... I am still learning the subtle differences between Large, Small and Essex Skippers.
Actually before I saw the answer to jezlee's question by aeshna I did say Small Skipper so it looks like I may be getting there .
By the way jezlee, that is a good close up photo of one of our smallest butterflies.

Hi Richard! Like you, I am gradually getting the feel of identifying things (well, the more common things!) around here ... and yet, I know there is SO much out there that I know nothing about. I feel this is a good thing, though, as it makes me realise that the old adage of " you learn something new every day" applies nowhere better than the world of nature, and will keep me well occupied for many years to come!
Oh, and thanks for your kind comments on the photograph .... |

I have been birdwatching for over 40 years so I like to think that ID issues are not a real problem to me (with the exception of the odd immature Gull or vagrant wader or warbler!).
Having just taken up both butterfly and dragonfly/damselfly watching this summer, it's like a whole new world of learning has opened up. It is just like it was when I was a kid trying to identify birds in the garden from the "Observers Book of Birds".
When I have mastered the butterflies and dragonflies/damselflies, then there are the moths, beetles, insects, flowers .... It should keep me out of mischief for a while longer .
What is so brilliant about WAB is that you can be a complete novice, ask an ID question and always get an answer from someone .

I looked at you thread earlier, but like Richard was not sure.
I am just starting to get in the world of Moths Butterflies, Dragonflies and Flowers.
What a lot there is to learn, it’s going to take a lifetime and a bit more
I can understand were Richard is coming from i've been a mad birder for years.
Nice picture, that's something else I have to start again Macro work

Hi Richard - you and I have come from the same background then! I've been a birder since I got married 30 years ago .... Before that, when I was growing up, I used to be a fisherman (didn't catch a lot!), but both activites got me out of the house and the town and into the countryside, so I have always had an interest in the other wildlife around me, but it's only since the advent of digital photography that I have really got into the other side of things, and now when I go out, I've usually got a camera in my hand rather than binoculars!
And there's so much to learn .... |

We are definitely coming from the same background .... like you, it is the advent of digital photography which has also awakened my real interest in other wildlife.
