Yours looks more like a Limonid cranefly

| | | Re: Fly for ID I think this is probably one of the true tipulid craneflies rather than a limoniid cranefly, and I would say it's genus Tipula, subgenus Savtschenkia (of which there are several species that are frequent at this time of year). Beyond that it increasingly becomes guesswork, but the yellow ovipositor and black tips to the femora (black "knees") are similar to Tipula (Savtschenkia) signata. I'd need it under a microscope to be certain though.

I have heard that there is one that is capable of biting humans but do not know which one that would be.

Naturegirl  | There are so many myths about craneflies but I have not heard about them biting. If adult craneflies do feed it is on liquid substrates e.g. nectar and they simply don't have the mouthparts to bite in the accepted sense. Maybe one of them could have pinched her with its legs etc. |
